Sky Warrior

Sky Warrior
I've long had a special place in my heart for hawks (raptors) I remember a time when seeing one was a big deal, DDT had almost wiped them out.
My dad told us Native American stories about warrior and sky maiden's decedents becoming hawks so they could fly between the sky people and the earth people's worlds protecting both

Rose Hip Jam

Rose Hip Jam
Rose Hip Jam, during WW2 in Britain, kids my mum included, were sent into the hedgerows to collect rose hips, which were dried for vitamin C supplementation. The piece contains a bit of one of my mums journals, where she complains there was no sugar to make them more palatable.

Pods and Corals

Creatures of the air and sea, delicate, imperiled and beautiful.
In a classical style still life a skull often was included to remind the viewer of the impermanence of life. In this my contemporary version the  shell takes the place of that grim reminder. Will future generations marvel at what we lost and condemn us for being so carelessly selfish? Or will children still be able to chase butterflies and collect treasures from the sea?

Joseph's Tree

Joseph's Tree
Joseph, our favorite park ranger, in our favorite SC State Park spun some amazing tales of history both natural and human. To him the magnolia was a symbol of friendship, beauty and generosity prevailing over the darkness of war, hate and evil deeds. This young tree overcame adversity, growing in a swampy salt marsh, and surviving several hurricanes that devastated the island in it's short life.
It is tenacity personified, the perfect symbol of all that is good in human nature.
